Hedgehog Care Guide for Beginners

Temperature requirements, enclosure setup, insectivore diet, and handling tips for a pet African Pygmy Hedgehog.

Hedgehog

Overview

The African Pygmy Hedgehog is a small, spiny insectivore from sub-Saharan Africa. They are covered in short, stiff quills that are used for protection. Despite the prickly exterior, hedgehogs are surprisingly sweet once they trust you.

They are nocturnal and solitary. They sleep during the day and become active at night. With patient, consistent handling, they can become calm and friendly companions.

Hedgehogs live 4–6 years and are illegal to own in some U.S. states (including California, Georgia, and Hawaii). Always check local laws before buying one.

Habitat & Housing

Hedgehogs need more space than most people give them. They can run several miles on a wheel in a single night.

  • Minimum enclosure: 2 × 4 feet of floor space
  • Use a smooth-sided container — plastic storage bins with ventilated lids work great
  • Avoid wire-sided cages — hedgehogs catch their feet in the wire and break legs

Temperature is critical. The room must stay between 72–80°F at all times.

  • Below 65°F: your hedgehog may go into torpor (appears dead — this is dangerous)
  • Above 85°F: risk of heatstroke

Use a thermostat-controlled ceramic heat emitter if your room drops below 72°F at night. Never let the temperature get cold.

Every hedgehog needs a solid-surface wheel at least 11 inches across. Wire wheels injure their feet and back. A Carolina Storm Wheel or Wodent Wheel are popular options.

Use paper-based bedding (like Carefresh) at 2–3 inches depth. Provide a cozy hide or fleece sleeping bag where your hedgehog spends its days.

Diet & Feeding

Hedgehogs are insectivores. Their diet should be high in protein and low in fat.

Main food: High-quality dry cat food works well. Look for:

  • 28–35% protein
  • Under 15% fat
  • First ingredient is a named meat (chicken or turkey)
  • No fish-based formulas

Insects (3–4 times a week): live or dried mealworms, crickets, or dubia roaches. Keep insects to about 10–15% of the diet — they are high in fat.

Fresh foods (small amounts):

  • Cooked chicken or hard-boiled egg
  • Vegetables: cucumber, cooked sweet potato, peas
  • Fruit: tiny piece of melon or apple (limit — high sugar)

Do not feed: avocado, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, seeds, dairy, or anything with artificial sweeteners.

Always provide fresh water in a heavy ceramic bowl or a ball-point water bottle. Check it every day.

Health & Common Issues

A healthy hedgehog is active at night, eating normally, and has clean, dry quills.

Torpor looks exactly like death. The hedgehog is cold, limp, and barely moving. Warm it gently in your cupped hands for 30–60 minutes. Prevent by keeping the room above 72°F at all times.

Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS) is a progressive neurological disease. Back leg weakness gets worse over time until the hedgehog cannot walk. There is no cure. It is genetic.

Cancer is very common in hedgehogs over 3 years old. Annual vet checkups are strongly recommended.

Mites cause intense scratching, quill loss, and dry, crusty skin. A vet will prescribe ivermectin to treat it.

Handling & Temperament

Hedgehogs huff, puff, and roll into a ball when first handled. This is completely normal defensive behavior — not aggression. With daily gentle handling, most hedgehogs relax and become very tame.

Start handling in the evening when your hedgehog is naturally awake. Use a fleece glove or towel for the first few weeks to protect your hands. Let the hedgehog settle and unroll on its own — do not force it.

Build trust gradually. Some hedgehogs warm up in a week. Others take a month. Patience and consistency are everything.

Hedgehogs must always live alone. Two hedgehogs will fight if housed together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hedgehogs legal where I live?

Check before buying! In the US, hedgehogs are illegal in California, Georgia, Hawaii, and Pennsylvania, among others. In Canada, they are illegal in several provinces. Check your local laws.

Why is my hedgehog losing quills?

Young hedgehogs (6–12 weeks) naturally lose their baby quills and grow adult ones. This is called “quilling” and is normal. Excessive quill loss in adult hedgehogs, especially with itchy skin, points to mites.

Can hedgehogs be kept in pairs?

No. Hedgehogs are solitary animals. Two hedgehogs housed together will fight.

My hedgehog seems dead — is it in torpor?

If it is cold and barely moving but has no unusual smell, it is likely in torpor. Warm it slowly in your cupped hands. Keep the room warmer going forward.
