Fighter Fish Care Guide for Beginners

Tank setup, water parameters, and feeding for Fighter Fish (Betta splendens) — the colorful, feisty tropical fish that deserves more than a bowl.

Fighter Fish

Overview

The Fighter Fish (also called Betta Fish or Siamese Fighting Fish) is one of the most famous aquarium fish in the world. Originally from Thailand, these fish have spectacular colors and long, flowing fins. Males are especially vivid and dramatic-looking.

Fighter Fish get their name from the fierce fights male fish have with each other. In a small tank, these fights are fatal — there is nowhere to retreat. Never keep two males together.

With proper care, fighter fish live 3–5 years. They are intelligent, recognize their owners, and make wonderful pets for a well-set-up aquarium.

Habitat & Housing

Fighter Fish need a minimum 5-gallon tank — a 10-gallon is much better. Bowls and tiny tanks cannot maintain stable temperature or water quality. This is the most important fact in this guide.

Fighter fish are tropical and need a heater. Water must stay between 76–82°F. Cold water weakens their immune system and shortens their life.

They need a filter — but with gentle flow. Their long fins make it hard to swim against strong currents. Use a sponge filter or baffle the outflow of a hang-on-back filter.

Add hiding spots, plants, and caves. Fighter fish love resting on broad leaves near the surface. A heavily planted tank keeps them comfortable and reduces stress.

Always keep a secure lid on the tank. Fighter fish jump and will land on the floor of an open tank.

Water Quality

Temperature76–82°F
pH6.5–7.5
Ammonia0 ppm
Nitrite0 ppm
NitrateUnder 20 ppm

Cycle the tank before adding the fish. This takes 2–4 weeks. Always use a dechlorinator (water conditioner) when adding tap water — chlorine kills beneficial bacteria and harms fish.

Change 25–30% of the water every week. Test with a liquid test kit monthly. Healthy water is the foundation of a healthy fish.

Diet & Feeding

Fighter fish are carnivores. They evolved to eat insects from the water surface.

Best foods:

  • High-quality betta pellets — 2–3 pellets, 1–2 times daily
  • Frozen bloodworms — great protein treat, 2–3 times a week
  • Frozen daphnia — excellent for digestion
  • Frozen brine shrimp — good variety

Only feed what the fish can eat in 2 minutes. Remove any uneaten food right away to keep the water clean.

Fast your fighter fish one day per week. This prevents bloating and digestive problems. It is an easy habit that makes a real difference.

Health & Common Issues

A healthy fighter fish has vivid color, holds its fins open and flowing, and swims actively around the tank.

Fin rot makes the fins look ragged or shrinking. It is caused by dirty water. Do more water changes. Use antibacterial medication if the rot is progressing.

Ich shows up as tiny white dots all over the body and fins. The fish will scratch against objects. Treat with ich medication and raise the temperature to 82°F.

Bloat causes a swollen belly with scales that stick out like a pine cone. It is very serious. Improve water quality to prevent it.

Handling & Temperament

You cannot handle a fighter fish, but they are very interactive. They learn to recognize their owner’s face. They will swim to the front of the glass when you walk by.

Fighter fish flare their fins and gills at their own reflection. A little flaring is healthy. Too much is stressful — cover any very reflective surfaces on the outside of the tank.

Good tankmates: small peaceful fish like neon tetras, cory catfish, and mystery snails. Never put two male fighter fish in the same tank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Fighter Fish flare at the glass?

It sees its own reflection and treats it as a rival. Brief flaring is fine. Constant flaring is stressful — cover the outside of the glass or rearrange the tank to reduce reflections.

Can female Fighter Fish live together?

Yes, a group of 5–6+ females (called a sorority) can sometimes live together in a 20+ gallon heavily planted tank. Watch closely for bullying, especially in the first few weeks.

How do I know if my Fighter Fish is sick?

Look for clamped fins (held tight to the body), faded color, hiding constantly, or not eating for more than 3 days. These all need attention.

Does a Fighter Fish need a lid?

Yes, always. Fighter fish jump, and an open tank is a trap. A secure lid or cover is essential.
