Betta Fish Care Guide for Beginners
Why bowls kill bettas: proper tank size, heater, filtration, water parameters, and diet for a long-lived, healthy Betta fish.
Overview
The Betta Fish is one of the most beautiful fish in the world. It comes from Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. Bettas have long, flowing fins and come in amazing colors.
Bettas can live 3–5 years with the right care. Most bettas in pet stores are kept in small cups. They deserve much better than that.
The biggest mistake people make is keeping bettas in bowls. Bowls are too small and too cold. Bettas need a real tank to be healthy and happy.
Habitat & Housing
Your betta needs a tank of at least 5 gallons. A 10-gallon tank is even better. Small tanks get dirty very fast and are hard to keep at the right temperature.
Bettas need a heater. They are tropical fish from warm countries. The water must stay between 76–82°F. Room temperature in most homes is too cold for them.
Bettas need a filter. But the current must be gentle. Bettas have big, heavy fins and struggle against fast water flow. Use a sponge filter or put a baffle on your filter output.
Add plants (real or silk) and some hiding spots. Bettas love resting on broad leaves. They feel safer with places to hide. Never use sharp plastic decorations — they tear fins.
Always keep a secure lid on the tank. Bettas are jumpers and will leap out of open tanks.
Water Quality
Test your water with a liquid test kit (not strips — strips are not accurate enough).
| Parameter | Target |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 76–82°F |
| pH | 6.5–7.5 |
| Ammonia | 0 ppm |
| Nitrite | 0 ppm |
| Nitrate | Under 20 ppm |
Before adding your betta, the tank must go through the nitrogen cycle. This process sets up good bacteria that break down fish waste. It takes 2–4 weeks. Do not skip this step.
Change 25–30% of the water every week. Always use a dechlorinator (water conditioner) when adding tap water. Chlorine in tap water will harm your fish.
Diet & Feeding
Bettas eat meat. They should not eat plain fish flakes. Their upturned mouths evolved to catch insects at the water surface.
The best foods are:
- Betta pellets — high-quality ones like Northfin or Fluval Bug Bites
- Frozen bloodworms — great protein treat, 2–3 times a week
- Frozen daphnia — helps prevent constipation
- Frozen brine shrimp — good variety
Feed 2–4 small pellets, 1–2 times a day. Only give what your betta can eat in 2 minutes. Remove any uneaten food right away.
Fast your betta one day per week. This prevents bloating and digestive problems. It is one of the most important things you can do.
Health & Common Issues
A healthy betta is brightly colored, swims upright, and eagerly comes to you at feeding time.
Fin rot makes the fins look ragged or shrinking. It is caused by dirty water. Do more water changes and treat with fin rot medication if it is serious.
Ich looks like tiny white salt grains on the body and fins. Your betta will scratch against objects. Treat with ich medication and raise the temperature to 82°F.
Bloat makes the belly swell up. The scales stick out like a pine cone. Keep the water very clean to prevent this. It is hard to treat once it starts.
Swim bladder problems cause the betta to float sideways or sink to the bottom. Fast for 2–3 days, then offer a tiny piece of cooked, skinless pea.
Handling & Temperament
You cannot handle a betta fish. But bettas are very interactive! They will recognize you and come to the front of the tank when you walk by.
Male bettas will flare their fins at their own reflection in the glass. A little flaring is healthy exercise. Too much causes stress — cover reflective surfaces if needed.
Never put two male bettas together. They will fight to the death. Males can sometimes live with small, peaceful fish, but always watch carefully after introducing new tankmates.
Cost & Commitment
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Betta fish | $5–$30 |
| 10-gallon tank kit | $40–$80 |
| Adjustable heater | $15–$30 |
| Sponge filter + air pump | $15–$25 |
| Monthly food | $5–$10 |
Bettas live 3–5 years. They need weekly water changes and daily feeding. They are a good pet for someone who wants something beautiful but manageable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Betta Fish live with other fish?
Yes, in a big enough tank. Good tankmates are small peaceful fish like ember tetras, cory catfish, and mystery snails. Avoid fin-nipping fish like tiger barbs.
Why does my Betta make bubbles at the surface?
That is a bubble nest! Male bettas build these when they feel safe and happy. It is a sign your betta is comfortable in its home.
Does a Betta Fish need a heater?
Yes, always. Bettas become sick in cold water. A 25W adjustable heater keeps the tank at the right temperature year-round.
How often should I change the water?
Change 25–30% of the water every week. Use a dechlorinator every time you add tap water.
